Cushions are an easy way to refresh a living room without changing the furniture. Plan the colour distribution, pattern scale, texture and sizes as one coordinated set.
Start with the sofa colour
Beige and cream sofas work well with olive, terracotta, mustard and muted blue. Grey sofas can be warmed with earthy colours or kept refined with black, white and soft blue. On a colourful sofa, repeat one existing shade and add calm neutrals.
Mix patterns with control
Combine one dominant pattern with a smaller motif and a plain or textured cushion. Avoid using several prints of the same scale; variation gives each design room to breathe.
Use a balanced set
Build from the outside in with larger cushions, then add smaller accents. Odd-numbered groups often feel relaxed, while symmetrical pairs create a more formal look.
