A tablecloth protects the table and sets the colour balance of the dining area. Measure the width and length, add the desired drop on every side and consider how frequently the cloth will be used.
A drop of roughly 20–25 cm on each side suits many everyday tables; a longer drop creates a more formal look. Measure diameter for a round table and both dimensions for square or rectangular tables. Check chair arms and table legs before deciding.
Balance a strongly patterned cloth with quieter tableware. A plain cloth provides a flexible base for a printed runner, coloured placemats and seasonal details.
