Choosing a Tablecloth: Size, Fabric and Decorating Guide

A tablecloth can transform the atmosphere of a dining space while protecting the table. A successful choice balances the table shape, measurements, frequency of use, fabric and room palette.

How to measure

Measure the width and length of rectangular or square tables, and the diameter of round tables. Add twice your preferred drop to each measurement. A 20–30 cm drop is practical for everyday dining; a longer drop creates a more formal appearance.

Choose fabric for the occasion

Easy-care, closely woven fabrics work well for daily use. Natural-looking textures and elegant drape suit special tables. Check the care label and finish before deciding.

Coordinate colour and pattern

Repeat one colour from the room or dinnerware. If the table setting is detailed, choose a calmer cloth; with simple dinnerware, a statement print can become the focal point.

Complete the table

Runners and placemats can be layered with a plain cloth or used alone. Keep the centrepiece low enough for comfortable conversation and leave sufficient space for place settings.
